Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No.195 of the 15th ultimo, relative to a petition received by you from Mr. W. Stanton, late Inspector in the Hong Kong police force, praying that a pension might be awarded to him on the allowance formerly drawn by him as Examiner of Weights and Measures.

2. The allowance in question was not included in the calculation of Mr. Stanton's pension, because it was paid in respect of "Other Charges" in the Police Magistrate Department, and being of a purely temporary nature has not hitherto been regarded as pensionable. A precedent exists in the case of Inspector Orley, who held the appointment of Examiner
